Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Rogue Cronus Magnum

As has been pointed out the Cronus Magnum is limited to in it's circuit design to 90 wpc. It does have more headroom and sound louder/more dynamic with KT120s than KT88s, 90s or 6550s.

My speakers are 87 db efficient and the CM produces plenty of punch and high end extension with the KT120s.

However, the small tubes in this piece make more of a difference than in any other tube amp I've heard, so I would try rolling them. Sovtek 12AX7LPS and Shuguang 12AX7 will produce a sound with more emphasis on leading edge transients, greater dynamics, more clarity and high frequency extension than the JJ Teslas, which are on the warm and soft side. These tubes are phase splitters and require balanced sections.

I don't know what brand(s) the other stock tubes (12AU7s) are now but they can also tailor the sound significantly. The driver tubes don't need to be matched but the pre-amp tube (single one in the center) needs to be selected for low noise and should be balanced.

Good luck.
