What sounded best to me for sure were Tung Sol Black Glass Round Plate. I tried dozens of others (I have more than 100 6SN7 tubes). But the BGRP simply sounded much, much better in the SLP-05 than the others.
For me, oddly perhaps, the runner up was the Sylvania 6SN7WGT. It's not as good as the TS, but very good. Like the TS, it's kind of an "all arounder", and I think that's what the Cary needs. Tubes that leaned one way or another didn't work well for me in the SLP-05.
BTW: I absolutely LOVE my SLP-05 - wonderful preamp.
