Yes, you are correct and so is Jim. Listen to him on this one. Circuits rule the roost, not testers. They are good and fun, but not the final say.
Hickok engineers were no dummy's. Most of their testers had to be a compromise. That's why the low voltages. And a big reason they are not good for power tube matching. You mention your tester is in a sorry state. When was the last time it was cal'd properly? And I don't mean that quicky test.
