hello,
the sound of a TFK ECC83 also depends on the sourrounding of it´s circuit if you want my opinion. i have a welter pre amp where in the line stage or phono stage the smooth plate does not sound at all. rather flat, too bright.
put in the V1 stage of my MC275 it sounds amazing there. but while the 83 sound amazing/convenient the 803s sounds outstanding in truth, dynamics, attack etc. the mirical of it´s performance obviously seems to be the frame grid construction which guaratees the most relyable elctric paramters.
very close to the TFK 803s comes the vintage TESLA E83CC white label/gold pins (frame grid!). only a bit less space. you also should try a VALVO ECC83 D-getter, long plate version which combines precison/truth and charming sound in a very spcecial way.
may be there are many good new brands on the market but on the 2nd listening no modern preamp tube comes close or even beats the old vintage types (not yet). these are MY experiences as a tube collector.
N.
