Jim- Generally speaking, the internal construction of a vacuum tube varies between tube types, but what "part" of a tube has enough of a "tolerance" or "play" that would allow it to move enough to make contact with another "part" of a tube, in order to make a noise? Not arguing with you, but I was basing my original post on something that I had witnessed first hand. Friend of mine was relocating one of his monoblocks that he had just unplugged, I think it was a Dynaco MKIV. Upon placing it in it's new location, he heard something (tubes cooling down?)and pulled the output tubes and shook them, listening for a rattle. He heard nothing, but less than a minute later(after reinserting the tubes and turning on the amp), one of the output tubes (EL-34) started glowing cherry red so he shut the amp down. This time he let everything cool down a bit before trying the tube , but unfortunately that output tube became unusable, and would not hold bias (kept turning "cherry red"). regards, Paul
