I have about a dozen 5998's, and about a half dozen 2399's. There seem to be no significant difference between them. Only Tung-Sol made either tube, and while some 5998's are halo-getter, and some are bottom getter, that's about the biggest difference I have ever seen (and that seemed to make zero difference in sound).
I have read that the 2399 is a 5998-style tube with 6AS7G-type specs (the 5998 is actually quite different from the 6AS7G in spite of being used very frequently as a sub for it). I have no way to corroborate this. My tester has settings for a 6AS7G, and not for a 5998. I have to guess at the right settings for the 5998 based on the differences in transconductance. All I can really test for in a 5998 is no shorts and no gas, and that it's "relatively" good.
