musicfile,
It's not for me to question your sonic intentions, and I use 12AU7's only in vintage gear, so I tend towards more articulate, energetic 12AU7's- Siemens triple mica 5814A's and best of all, the Amperex 7316.
Still, if you want a lush, deep, and sweet 12AU7, you might like the sound from 50's organ labeled- like Conn or Baldwin- black plate 12AU7's that were made by Sylvania. I imagine the non-organ Sylvanias of the same period would be the same tube- it's only that all my Sylvania 12AU7s are "Baldwins". You might also like the earlier CBS 5814A, which has a good balance between energetic and liquidity. I would recommend against the RCA "Cleartop" which I imagine you might find a bit bright.
And, I believe if you found a good, reasonably priced Philips/Amperex/Valvo 7316 (also called ECC186)- you'll never use anything else for 12AU7. -Deep, open, and articulate.
Cheers,
Bambi B
