6- Telefunkens, 2- Amperex Orange Globes, GE Black plates 5751, Mullards IEC, and 4- Siemens 12AX7WA

Dr. Phil,

I will now have 3 pairs of Telefunkens, one pair of Amperex Orange Globes, GE Black plates 5751, Mullards IEC, and 2 pais of the Siemens 12ax7wa that are coming from Italy. The IEC are coming from France.

I also have new tubes Tung sol 12ax7 gold pins (which sound very nice) and some 2001 Sovtek 12ax7lps which sound very clean with great bottom end. Not sure how long these will last, but they sound excellent regardless of the above NOS tubes.

For a relatively fast collection of NOS, there are some really good ones in your list.

Telefunken: I've found Telefunken to have a certain refinement- a delicacy almost that does work in some vintage gear as it compensates a bit for muddiness or slowness. They last forever!

Amperex: The Orange Globes are probably 1969 to 1974 and are very good. The Philips/Amperex Valvo/Mullard 12AX7s of the early to late 1960's are to me a tiny bit smoother than the Orange Globes, but still both do everything very well- not warm or hard. You can save, save, save, if you buy these labeled Valvo off of German Ebay.

GE Black plate 5751: I'm a big fan of the 5751 and ended up getting 19- Sylvania triple mica black plate 5751's just fantastic. However, the GE has a punchier bass and I often use the later grey plate version in a Peavey VMP-2 microphone preamp.

Mullard: I have very few Mullard tubes- 3- GZ34 rectifiers for a Dynaco ST70, and a single Mullard 10M EF94, gold pin- in a purple and gold presentation box with factory test results. This is only a premium 6AU6 which I bought mainly to have a Mullard 10M. But, generally I don't find Mullard 12AX7s- (I have three in an EICO HF-12 integrated mono amplifier and tried them Dynaco PAS3) to have the kind of bass I like- transparent and with effortless authority. Of course, it may be the gear I tried them with that does not have those qualities. And the IEC aspect is something I don't know too much about, but was done a bit later.

Siemens: I think you'll find those to be very attractive.

Tung Sol reissue: Have not heard them but by reputation they must work just fine. Frankly, for the cost of the reissue, one can get early 60's Valvos that test as new, so the Tung Sol would have to be very good.

Sovtek LPS: I received 6 of these with the Peavey VMP-2 and while I didn't give them enough time to fully develop, they were super quiet and beginning to sound just fine when I changed them for Sylvania 5751's. I haven't heard the new JJ's and other current production tubes, but the LPS gives me hope that there will someday be new 12AX7s sounding as good as the old ones.

Tungsram: If you can find good Tungsram ECC83- these are supposed to be very good- by reputation slightly warm. I'm using Tungsram E88CC- 6922- in my Audio Research SP10 for the 6 cathode followers and etc. and Tungsram seem to be very quiet, have well-matched triode sections, and well-made. And it's very nice that they're not expensive.

- You have chosen wisely!

Cheers,

Bambi B
