I suppose the relevant phrase in the L/S. times quote is, "Since the sale of flat-panel televisions began to rocket early in the decade, TV-related power usage has more than tripled to 10 billion kilowatt-hours per year,.", suggesting that panel screens use much more energy than CRT's.
