Just our of curiosity, did you try a different NOS 6HU6/EM87 than the one causing you the trouble?
I have a MC84C-07, and I have been using various 6HU6/EM87's (Tung-Sol, Sylvania, and Mullard) in place of the 6E2, and I have never had the issue you describe. I too am using MOS Mullard EL84 output tubes. Maybe the 6HU6 you used is not up to spec.
Just a thought, as you should, IME, be able to swap in a 6HU6 with no issues.
