I will tell you and I know others feel this way,I don't like the 12au7 in an amplifier period! THe 6cg7 is so much better and its more or less a drop in replacement for a 12au7 by just moving the filament wires when you have a 6.3v fil source. The tube is much more linear and makes more power and the end result is,lower distortion with a more detailed and open sound.
For the life of me i can't understand why any manufacturer or builder would still use the 12au7 and the only thing I can think of is,they are cheap, and available. I really thought the 12au7 was superb in a preamp, but in the last few weeks I have found they mushed up the sound in the scott 130 after I had changed those tubes over to the 6dj8. I am in the process of running the 6dj8s in the mac c20 in place of the 12au7s.
Now,try your 12bh7 instead of the 12au7 and you will get an idea if you like the sound of the 6cg7.If your circuit is optimized for a 12au7,the 6cg7 will work best and thats a promise I can confidently make.
