pennyford,
I believe GEC is more or less General Electric Company, but has a link to Marconi Canada and Marconi-Osram. There are connections to Genelex as well- I think.
As far as I know, your GEC 12AX7s may be selected Mullards- or even General Electric of Canada, which may or may not also be Marconi, Canada or Marconi-Osram- just as for so many tube companies- complicated company connections. Are they marked for country of origin? Are there any etched codes?
GEC had a special designation for some 12AX7's which was B759- which are rare enough I've never seen one, but I think overall GEC are carefully selected tubes by other makers- they weren't manufacturers. If they have life left, they are likely to be quite high quality.
I have a Fisher 800C receiver that arrived with 8 -Telefunken ECC83's with Fisher markings and I believe that Fisher also relabeled Mullards for their receivers, the 800 at least. If you find tiny etched codes on the GEC's, I'd suspect Mullards.
Perhaps our friends formerly known as tubemonger- sorry I can't remember the new moniker- can correct this and fill in details?
Cheers,
Bambi B
