Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

When (were) they what?

If by "recent MC275" you mean the Gordon Gow Commemorative Edition, or the non-GG-badged version that was available just afterwards, yes they came with the Richarson tubes.

The two latest versions, all the MkIV's and (most? of) the MkV's (until maybe recently) came with New Sensor Electro Harmonix KT88's and Chinese (probably Shuggies) 9-pins.

Besides having the lowest Gm in the industry (5000 umhos) the EH KT88's had/have serious reliability issues resulting in many brand new amps having to go back to the factory for repairs after the power tube(s) blew. So it doesn't surprise me to hear Mac is now using Shuguang KT88 for their OEM power tubes.

The 9-pins in the Gordon Gow model may indeed have been EH's, I don't know. Mac uses Chinese 9-pins in their current tube amps and preamps, unless they've made a very recent change.

I was curious to hear that the Richardson KT88's were considered not all that. I've never heard them (in anything) but understood they were a really great tube -- however that may have been a reference to an earlier version than the "special run" they made for the GG MC275.
