Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Radioactive 5751

Hmmm....What a coincidence. I was just browsing Audiogon and saw this. I am not associated with the seller in any way.

"RARE 1963 GENERAL ELECTRIC RHENIUM 187 2 MICA GREY PLATE 5751 12AX7 SUB RADIOACTIVE SUPER TUBES-These are special 1963 GE 5751 which have filaments which have been enhanced with the radioactive isotope Rhenium 187. I have contacted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and I can assure my buyers that there is no need to run and get your rad suit on, the radiation level from these tubes is so minuscule that they are considered completely safe for use around human beings and can be carried in your shirt pocket. When they wear out they can be disposed of as regular trash. These tubes were designed for certain military radios that shut off the tubes which amplify the outgoing signal while the radio is receiving and then turn them on again and shut off the tubes which amplify the incoming signal when the unit is transmitting. The switching happens instantaneously and so special purpose tubes were designed which would function properly under those extreme conditions. The Rhenium 187 in the filament causes a small electrical charge to be present at all times dramatically increasing the tubes responsiveness even from a cold start. An example of how this may be useful in an audio playback situation would be when playing music with dramatic stops and starts and volume swells such as Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Rhenium filaments are also used in seismological equipment to measure vibrations in the Earths crust, another application where precision responsiveness is required."

Interesting.
Thanks to all the gentlemen who inputed to my orig post!
