Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Why can't we buy a good sounding/long lasting current production 6550?

I've been using the TS replicas for a couple of years now. First in a rebuilt and modded Eico HF-89 and now in custom PPP mono-blocks. In both cases the tubes are triode connected. I like the sound of the new Russians. Not quite the same to me as in the originals, but in some ways more "neutral" to my ears. Reliability is not quite up to the originals though. Invaribly one tube will get "gassey" before its time and fail, usually after a year and a half or so of use. Original TSs in same application would give a little better than two years sevice. With my current amps requiring two matched quads it makes no sense to me to burn NOS at NOS prices when the Russian replicas can be had for $120/quad. BTW, I have some nice matched quads of NOS GEC KT-88s if someone is crazy enough to pay me current prices. Also some black-plate TSs.
