really good 12AX7's can cost a lot, and you can get GREAT 6SJ7GTs cheap, like the JAN Phillips 6SJ7WGTs that Angela instruments sells NOS for $12 each. On EBay you can regularly score Sylvanias for even less, and these are also very good. The Sylvania or Raytheon smooth-plate, tall bottle VT-116A are also very good. The best 6SJ7GTs are the Tung-sol mesh-plates, but these can be pricey.
Forget about the metal-can versions, these are horribly microphonic. Stick with the GT glass-envelope versions.
