$1.00 in 1959 had about the same buying power as $7.28 in 2008. So the new price of a GE 12AX7 of $2.55 in 1959 is like $18.56 in today's money.
You can buy a NOS testing GE 12AX7 for about that today.
That RCA price lists shows a 6AS7G for $6.25 - in today's dollars that should cost you about $45, and yet you can but a NOS RCA 6AS7G for about $12.
It's only the crazy-popular tubes that are expensive. In general, tubes remain very fairly priced, often silly-cheap!
