between the alpha v. numeric tubes (I agree Bambi, pin material isn't one of them ;-) And the lower gain of numerics can certainly make a negative difference in preamp application. I've heard C-J preamp owners say they can't even use the numerics.
I just scored 5 NIB Sylvania GB gold pin blackplate 6201's for $105, so good prices are still out there. I am VERY interested in hearing the siemens E81CC's but I can't find them ANYWHERE! If anyone runs across a couple of (not perfectly, just reasonably) matched pair, kindly holla!
