musetap said, "[I] now know that the term Holy Grail in relation to them [ECC803S] wasn't/isn't being tossed about lightly." I thought so too, and I also agree with Len's explanation why. In fact a (tube seller) friend of mine just sold a pair from the TFK Ulm Museum! for $1300. HOWEVER . . . . . I recently took the time (and spent the money!) to investigate (almost) all of Joe's recommendations first hand (see Tube Lore below, written in 1999, so prices have gone way up from what he quotes ;-) and I have to agree with his findings: namely that the Sylvania or RCA triple mica blackplate 5751's beat out any 12AX7 I auditioned. OK I didn't actually hear a TFK "grail", but I'm confident it couldn't be that much better than the all the (second) best 12AX7's I did hear, including TFK smooth, RCA/Sylvania/GE blackplate-longplate, Amperex, Mullard, etc. Another 12AX7 "grail" I've not heard (and which sells for even more than the 803S) is the GEC Gold Lion B759. So I'm no longer in awe of the fabled 803S, having discovered the 5751; and ditto the 6201 (12AT7). There's an interesting AX7 shootout report here: http://hktubeaudio.homestead.com/files/12AX7.html
