or any 12AV7/12AY7 substitute. . . .unless your power supply can handle a larger filament current draw (probably not!) If you want a great sounding but lower gain (70%) version of a 12AT7, what you want is a 6201. My favorite is the Sylvania Gold Brand blackplate: 2 mica or 3 mica, gold pins or steel pins.
5965's are excellent tubes, but they usually can't be substituted for 12AT7's in most circuits without modifications to the power supply.
