RE: PC Cooling Fans for Tube Amplifier

Here are some tips and tricks I learned when purchasing fans. (I needed two, placed on top of the tube cage of my Mac MC275 and blowing up, not into the tube cage ;-)

1. The best selection will be at local (not chain) computer stores, where people buy separate components to build their own computers. I use a couple of 80mm square Stealth fans (case size, always spec'd in mm) by VANTEC: http://www.vantecusa.com They draw .1A @ 12V DC (ie nothing!) Model No. SF8025L

2. For least noise, it's IMPORTANT to get roller bearing type fans, NOT the more common (and only pennies cheaper) sleeve bearing ones.

3. 12V fans can be run at 9V or even 6V, will be much quieter, and still do a great job. The best made/attractive transformer/rectifier (warts) I've found, are at Radio Shack (of all places!) plus you can keep returning them until you determine which voltage you like ;-)
In fact I'm running the two 12V fans in parallel off a 9V wall wart. Just make sure the amp rating of the wart is greater than the sum of the fans' current draw.

4. When possible, it's always better (more efficient cooling) to use the fan to exhaust heat away from the equipment rather than blowing cool air at it - this is especially true with amps.
