RE: PC Cooling Fans for Tube Amplifier

Greetings- Parts Express sells a little adjustable (3,4.5,6,7.5,9,and 12 vdc) 2 amp regulated power supply for about $12.00.If it is not on sale for $12.00, wait a week, they are on sale more often than they are not. If you want to get away REAL cheap, grab two or three PC fans (free on trash day where I live) and tie wrap them to a small cookie cooling rack (or something simiLar). The two or three fans combined should pull much less than an amp of current. Try running the 12 volt fans at 12 volts first just to get an idea of the sound (noise), then bring the voltage down a click at a time (12v> 9v> 7.5v> 6v> and lower if necessary), taking the time to listen to the decrease in sound (noise) generated by the slower turning fan.I think that you will find that the fans are nearly inaudible running at 6 volts. Remember, you are trying to evacuate the heat around the amp to ALLOW it to run cooler, not "cool down" the amp per say, by making the tubes or transformers run cooler. If you happen to have a DMM with a temperature probe, it will be interesting to measure the before and after. In a pinch, I think that you may be able to use an oven thermometer, but I've not tried that. Good luck and most of all, be safe and HAVE FUN!!, regards, wpod
