RE: Best current KT88

Since the issue is raised, does anyone know for a fact, the purpose of holes in plates? I've heard (A) for cooling, (B) to be able to inspect the filament-to-cathode spacing, or . . . . . . .? Does anyone know the definitive reason? Thanks.
