I have a VAC standard Preamp LE that also used the 12AX7 in the MM phono stage and a pair in the preamp section (also with a pair of 12AU7). So my experience is close, but not exact.I like the newest Sovtek 12AX7LPS for low noise new production. Jim McShane is a good source for these. I also like the Tesla ECC803 from TubeMonger for NOS. RCA cleartops were nice in the phono stage if you need a brightly lit presentation. Smooth plate Telefunken ECC83 are very nice as well. Mullard CV4004 are also worth investigating...nice tone.
I use Telefunken ECC82 in the 12AU7 position. Brimars, Tung Sols are both worth looking for. I've tried a few different 5963's as well that were Sylvania Gold Brands and are very neutral and work well. I haven't found any new production I like much in this position.
