Never had the occassion to try real GEC KT88's, my pocket books aren't deep enough. I have tried the Shunguag GEC Replica, also known as the GEKT88 and has other flavours as well. The Shunguag quad I had didn't excite me at first, but after going back to them a few times and getting enough burnin on them I really liked them. Very smooth, well rounded images that were very easy to listen to. Fairly good bass.I also have some KT90's Type II that up there with the best if you can find them. Very dynamic in my VAC. More up front and better detail than the Shunguag. Not as much midrange magic.
Also tried JJKT88's, they're my least favorite. Big rounded bass, decent midrange, but not the best in my amp.
I've had winged C SED's in since Christmas. The SEDs are the winged C's from Tubestore. Burn in took awhile, but these have a really nice midrange. Bass isn't the best, but it's quite decent. Very nice sound that is easy to live with. Fairly good all-rounder.
Most tubes to consider is the EH KT88's which are supposed to be really good or any of the Shunguag varieties.
