KT88 types in the PA100.100

I love finding topics near and dear to my experience. I've had a PA100.100 for about three years. Tried some different tubes and have come away with some impressions which I'll share.

Original VAC labeled JJ's: Not bad, not great. The bass was a bit fat and the transparency wasn't anything to write home about. Servicable but hardly noteworth.

GEC copies from Shunguang: States GEC COPY on the tube. Bought direct from Hong Kong from WiWiTubes. Didn't like them at first. They seemed cheap sounding w/o dynamics. Eventually gave them many hours of play and they got much better. I fell in love with their warmth and pace. Very musical. MOst likely similar to the Penta Labs version. Nice tubes. Finally had one die out on me after a year.

KT90 Type II's: THe primo version from Jim McShane. Needs some time to settle in and sound their best. Awesome dynamics and nice transparency. Not quite the airy bloom of the KT88's, more neutral sounding. One of the best I've heard and still use them a lot. Nice if you can find some.

SED KT88's: Just got a brand new matched quad for Christmas from Tube Depot. I had heard some negative comments about these, but kept an open mind. After a solid week of playtime they are much better than their reputation. Very nice transparency, nice boogie factor, decent bass. I'll still wait awhile for them to settle down fully, but so far I'm impressed. Very smooth and musical.

I'd still like to try the newest Penta solid plates and the EH. I'm glad there are many options. BTW, the VAC PA100.100 is one of the best tube amps on the used market. I use a VAC Standard PReamp LE with mine on a pair of Merlin VSM-MM with SuperBAM. Very musical.
