came home and put on some vinyl. Boy was I surprised. So far in my Minimax phono, I have tried Mullard CV 4004 ( better bass than stock, somewhat smoother, less depth to soundstage), and 1959 Bugle Boys, branded Pope( better soundstage than 4004s, more detailed bass, better balanced). But neither had the 3D depth, emotion or conveyed the venue of the stock tubes. The GT had it all. It was the ability to convey the emotion of a live performance as well as good venue that made me buy the Minimax. With the GT 12AX7s, it has all that plus the smoothness and balance of a much more expensive phono pre. I ordered a set of Tel smooth plates two days ago. They will have their work cut out for them to best these current production tubes.Just goes to show me that I need to try the current production first, then NOS when tube rolling.
