I tried a set of EL34s in my Rocket when I had it, and It seemed to only have about half as much power. Actually they were NOS Phillips 6CA7s.
Did you detect a drop in power and dynamics with the 6550s? My fave power tube was Svetlana KT88s with Telfunken 6DJ8s for the small tubes. Siemens 6922s were nice too. The stock EL84s are decent.
