I agree with an earlier post that it is desirable to get tubes somewhere in your amplification system, and that a tubed preamp will probably be the least problematic. You can also use a power amp that uses tubes for input and driver stages, and transistors for the output stage, without creating possible major interactions with your speaker load. I had a solid state amp and tube preamp for years, and it worked great. As far as tube problems, one of my tube preamps failed--a solid-state voltage regulator failed, but never a tube. A couple of years ago I switched to all-tube amplification and will never go back to solid-state. A lot of how well a tube amp works in your system depends on your speakers, how loudly you listen, type of music you listen to, your room size, other components in your system, and your tastes. I would suggest borrowing some equipment from a dealer or friend and see how it works.
