See my post above about grid resistor value. Note that the 500C has the same value as the 299C. Drop 'em to under 200K, be sure the coupling caps are good, and you'll have no problem with the tubes (assuming they are properly matched and burned in).

If it was my 500C, I'd raise the coupling caps to .1, and drop the grid resistors to 150K. That way the time constant is nearly identical to the stock configuration.

In the 299C I'd go to .22 caps and 150K as well.
