RE: Is there a 12A_7 tube that is around 30 in gain?

Mu is the maximum available "amplification factor" - the gain with a constant-current load (effectively infinite resistance).

With typical circuit values, a 12AX7 delivers a gain of about 60. See the table at the top of sheet 2 in the GE datasheet.
