Triode Mode cause amp to run hotter?

Modifed ST 70 appears to run hotter in triode... Is this to be expected, a function of changing the operation of the tube, or of pushing the tube harder to achieve equal volume..? Pardon me if I just answered my own question.

Any input appreciated.
