In my experience you don't need whisky to be able to appreciate the GEC KT88s but I like the idea -:)
Regarding small tubes, my amp uses 3 x 6N3 preamp tubes which were Chinese originally. First of all, I used three military Reflektor 6N3P which were cheap as chips but actually lovely sounding and made a big difference in sound.
The centre one works as input (voltage amp) stage while the other two as drivers. I was told that the effect of the driver tubes on sound is neglible compared to the input tube, so I upgraded the pre-amp Chinese Valves to a NOS Western Electric 396A as the input tube and 2 NOS GE 5670 as driver tubes.
And it sounds good compared to the Chinese Valves.
