RE: Current production GZ34

Todd,

The unpleasant reality is that no current production 5AR4/GZ34 is 100% satisfactory. All of JJ's Octal production is trash. Chinese tubes have no problems running at the max. rated voltage, but they get into trouble when the rated 250 mA. is drawn. OTOH, Russian (Sovtek) tubes are fine with a 250 mA. draw, but get into trouble when required to run at the max. rated voltage. :> (

IMO, the best answer to the conundrum is to wire the rectifier socket as shown in the uploaded graphic. Use UF4007 SS diodes, as they are MUCH quieter than 1N4007s shown. The "sand" diodes provide some PIV headroom for the otherwise acceptable Sovtek rectifier. The tweak can help aging old stock tubes to last a bit longer, as well. The sonic signature is (thankfully) dominated by the vacuum rectifier. The Russian rectifier has a reputation for sounding good.
