Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Heathkit W5Ms, Quad IIs, Acrosound, Eico

I would not recomend the W-5. This model is notorious for blowing the power and output transformers.

The W-2 used a Peerless transformer. The W-3 used the Acro TO-300 and is fairly common. It is identicle to the W-2 except for the transformer.

A better Heath choice is the W-4, more common, cheaper and more reliable than the W-5. Does not abuse tubes, but does not sound as good as the W-5.

Some of the Eico amps ran the output tubes very hard; the HF-87 and 89 come to mind here.

My vote goes for the Dynaco ST-70. Not at all uncommon to find one in working condition, still with the original compliment of tubes. They are easy to repair and all of the tubes are readily available.

The ST-70 was designed so that the component parts were run conservatively and would last for years.

The Quad II also has a deserved reputation for longevity. It was built to military standards and to withstand long term use in subtropical climates. However, they tend to be expensive.

Best,

Ross
