I wouldn't suggest that you necessarily rule out amps with rectifier tubes---they can sound awfully good, and there are new production rectifiers for many of the popular types.I have an old Dyna Stereo 70 which I love. These can usually be had for $200-300, and there are mods and upgrades in abundance. A good way to get in cheap!
It uses a 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier, which for a long while was hard to come by, but now that Sovtek is making them again, this is not a big issue. Same with the EL-34 output tubes, Svetlana makes an excellent one, and there are others.
