I to like the ST-70. A true audio example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.Have you tried any of the Eico EL-34 amps ? HF-87 HF-89 were stereo and the HF-35 and 50(?) were mono. Eico amps tend to run the EL-34 quite hard. Some say these are the most natural sounding of all of the EL-34 amps. I do like my HF-87, but have not really listened to any of the others.
What about the original Dynaco MK-2 (not later 3 with different transformoer), or the Acro UL-2 ?
While the Marantz 2, 5, 8, 9 may well be the top of the EL-34 heap, I do not feel that their respective sonic qualities are worth the price premium.
I also have a humble Fisher 680 that was pulled from a console and converted to EL-34 (7591). With Svetlanas, I get a very nice sound. Not as lush as the Dynaco, but still has plenty of tube warmth.
Best,
Ross
