For what it's worth, I suggest purchasing a Conrad Johnson PV-1 Pre amplifier, a pair of Eico HF-20 amplifiers, and a pair of Dynaco A-25 speakers. The Eico's are integrated amps but can be used as power amps by using the tape output as an input. This is the very best system combination you will find for less than $1K. Eico's sell between $250 and $325 a pair on ebay, Dynaco A-25' between $100 and $200, which leaves you as much as $500 to $650 to scrounge up a PV-1. The prices I quoted were taken directly from Ebay completed items so you could do a lot better locally if you go digging. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with this setup which will rival many high end systems costing $$$ more. Also there is quite a bit of sensible modification potential intrinsic in these products.
