Re: consider the EICO HF-81...

Stefan:

Yup, I own a Zen SE84B which has provided me with a lot of listening pleasure. I don't personally have a lot of experience with the HF-81, but my parents did use its monoblock sibling the HF-12 when I was a child, and my father and I both have fond memories of them. Many feel the HF-12/HF-81 were the best sounding EICO amps, even though EICO's bigger amps had much more impressive iron. There was a stereo poweramp version too. I really can't say whether they sound like a SET, though... I kind of doubt it.

As to HF-81 vs. a Zen... well the latter is about 1W per channel, and the former is about 12! If you have good, very efficient speakers, the Zen is a reasonable choice. The Zen has enough power for my Cornwalls, but I am thinking seriously about moving up to 2A3 amps! If you have "normal" speakers, I think you'll be happier with a good pp amp like the HF-81. Conversely, I think an HF-81 will mate happily with a much wider range of speakers than the Zen or other SET's will... if you need speakers too!

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

all the best,
mrh
