RE: If you're referring to NOS XF1/XF2...

A lot of it is synergy. In my case,I run a very a unique setup that shocks some people. They are surprised that I run a pair of vintage Citation 2s mono strapped on a pair 25k dollar Martin Logan esls.I also use pair of ML Descent subs but they look at me like, why aren't you running Krell, or Audio research,or VTL amps on that expensive of a speaker? They always tell me how crazy I am for doing this until the hear the system for themselves. Then they understand.

The point is,the speakers are very revealing and have very wide bandwidth and low distortion,so the McShaned modded Deuces are a great match for these speakers.

This brings me to another point.Since the Martin Logan/Citaton 2 system resides next door in Mom's basement, which by the way is sound proofed,I'm always at my house and in my family room I have pair of New Form research ribbons..They use a pair of Scan speak woofers in each cabinet for the bass, and the tall basically full range ribbons handle everything from about 150cps on up I would guess..At any rate,i can drive these speakers with low powered amps in the 25 watt range, all the way to 500 watts.

Like the Martin Logans, the NFR ribbons are tremendously detailed focused, and revealing,so when I use tubes like the XF2 EL34s,the top and bottom roll off and smear is very apparent. You are correct when you say the SEDs are brighter on the top,but on my speakers because of the speed, detail, and focus, that comes thru as more correct definition.I have a lot of vintage NOS XF2s and used ones but,I only keep them for reference and collection purposes.I use the KT77 reissues, and the 6P3Se,and the Rca 6L6gc black plates most of the time in the Eico HF87s,but my KT88 amps run 6550 black plates,EI KT90s,or Gen reissues.I like Amperex EL34 DD getter lately, but mostly when I'm streaming.I simply don't buy that the XF2 or even the XF1s are as good as the Dutch Amperex or the Dutch Philips metal base,or even the KT77 reissues,at least on my speaker systems. So YMMV.
