Re: New or vintage ? (nt)

Some swear by the Dynaco ST-35. I like the sound, but bass responce is lacking to my ears.

Fisher SA-16 is an industrial looking console amp. However the sound is sublime. Nice tube sound from the warm bass up to the shimmering treble. Great results with original Quad ESL.

Fisher 20a or 30a monoblocks. GREAT amps- tight bass and very neutral from top to bottom.

Eico HF-86. Tube sound, but with bass responce !

Eico HF-14 monoblocks. More tube sounding than the Fisher monoblocks, buy slightly more midrange clarity. Does not sound like a mono HF-86.

Heath AA-111. My favorite. Clean tight bass and a nice balance between tube sound and neutrality. Liquid midrange and extended shimmering treble.

All of the above will be in the $250-400 range and expect to have to replace some caps and resistors along the way. These amps hold their value well, so it should be easy for you to try several of them over time to decide which suits you better.

I have not heard the Leak-20, but those that have say it is better than any of the american amps I mentioned. Cost however, will be much more.

Best,

Ross
