Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: that's not much ov a gamble...

You would be far better off putting the few hundred into the Fisher 800 and using that than any lower end tube amplifier. I would rather listen to a restored Fisher 800 than any lower end entry level tube amp. The Fisher tube gear is over built like a tank. The iron was very good in Fisher equipment. You could then save slowly for something much better. I owned a Fisher 500c and that was one very musical receiver. It easily drove 4 - 4 ohm 91dB efficient Celestion speakers. I still own a Fisher FM-1000 tube tuner. Fisher gear is built well and if it is properly gone through and serviced will continue to sound good for another 40 years. Didn't you buy a recent 300b tube amplifier? Maybe what you are not happy with is your speakers? To me the speakers are the most important part of your stereo. Always remember that all audio is very subjective. None more so than tube amplifiers and horn speakers. Go with what sounds the best in your own home stereo. Good luck! John C.
