TF,I've seen a number of these excellent late 1980's Audio Research amplifers for sale around $800. This was probably a $3000 amplifer new. The D70 is a pure- tube (4-6550s), 65W/channel stereo amplifier. Besides the top, top build qaulity, these are wonderfully sweet, dynamic, and have one of the greatest abilities to resolve and differentiate instruments in 3D space. Not the absolute end all in tough bass, but good tube choices can make it very, very good. I believe this is currently an undervalued piece of gear.
For 17 years, I've used the cousin to the D-70, the 105W D-115, (with LP and ARC SP8 or SP10) to Vandersteen 2Cs. The sound of the D115 is similar to the D70. I know the D70 is good with the 2Cs also as I heard the two amps side by side. (I've also run my 2Cs on a McIntosh MC240 (40W) with good results.
If a really nice tube amp at a good value is in your view, the D-70 is really worth looking into.
Cheers,
