A tubed preamp can be as important as a tubed power amp. Try a tubed preamp in front of your SS power amp/"Maggie" setup and find out.If you are willing to "sling solder", the Foreplay kit from AA sponsor Bottlehead Corp. is a great introduction to tubes, as it is inexpensive and sounds good.
BTW, horn speaker systems tend to be quite efficient. The 35 WPC yielded by a stock ST70 may be more than you need.
