Re: Eico HF-85 or Foreplay/Seduction?

David,

I use a modern tube linestage/phonostage/system with a ton of vintage amps.I'm not biased toward any vintage preamps just'cause my father owned a particular brand.I`ve owned nearly any vintage preamp you can think of(all completely rebuilt).I`ve narrowed it down to 2 pieces.Citation 1 and HF-85.I think the 85 creams the PAS.That's because I like a clean incisive ballsy sound. The 85 can give you that.A PAS cannot. The 85 has drive. The PAS doesn't.That's only my opinion. The only quirk with the 85 is the volume control. It can be a pain in the ass. Also, you'll have to replace some parts most likely. The 20/40/40 can cap was kaput in both of my 85s.Also,the .25@ 200 blocking caps at the output and phono stages were leaky.Same issue with the cathode bypass lytics in the phonostage. The .1@400 Pyramids passed tests on the Tel-O-Mike so they stayed.Anyway,it's a low budget rebuild.Good Luck with whatever you choose.
