Re: Excess line voltage can kill an amp

Koo--you started out this discussion saying that people should check their household line voltage (a great idea!), and that this voltage would check 5 volts higher with a digital meter than with an analog meter. The is simply not true when talking about properly calibrated instruments. I would wonder too, how a meter could offer suffient load to alter the reading on an isolation transformer, especially on the higher voltage ranges. With analog meters the loading depends upon the scale used. Now if you were measuring with an analog meter on the 1 volt scale the load might be 5,000 ohms, and greatly affect the reading obtained.

Agreed--would be nice to have higher voltage electrolytics. To really be safe one could put two 47 mfd @450 volt in series with a 470K bleeder resistor across them. But--that is alot of hardware to fit when it may not be necessary. I have used the big Solens in a scope before.

I always test gear on my Sencore PR570 AC supply. This allows observation of the input voltage to the device powered, and the current being drawn at the same time. The unit also has an adjustable circuit breaker for addition protection. This Sencore piece is expensive, buy I appreciate it every time I use it.
