At 200 ma (50 per tube) the sound is good on the El-34 Double D getters. However, I thought it was a bit lean and soundstage was somewhat narrow in comparison to the 6550 blackplates. Also, I thought it was somewhat the same kind of comparison as too how they sounded in my standard AES Superamp. So last night I biased them up at 235 mA for the quad and YEOW! The whole thing just exploded in this huge presence! The soundstage was now engulfing and the bass in just mind boggling. Vocals especially became huge and full of emotion! Now I can only imagine what the Tung Sol 6550 may sound like biased a little hotter. IS there a recognized "correct" setting for an EL-34 at 495 plate volts? Do ya think this bump from 50 mA per tube to 59 mA per tube will be that hard on the tubes? My God, it may be worth the risk??????
