Stealing someone else's intellectual property for commercial profit is obviously a different matter in the eyes of the law (and of ethics).
As your UK reference points out, to use other people's work - including those distributed online - you must have expressed permission from the copyright holder(s). Putting a © on your intellectual property is a good idea, but it is not a requisite for copyright protection. As Ed mentioned, if you created it, it's copyrighted.
UK and US copyright laws, as with most of the western world which have adopted intellectual property protection, are near mirror images of one another and enforced across intertional borders.
