Most places allow you to return defective tubes in 30 days for a refund or exchange.Personally I am glad that other dealers do NOT allow returns of non-defective tubes. That gives me comfort that the tubes I buy from them represented as NOS haven't been used by tire-kickers many times over, possibly in malfunctioning or abusive equipment, or in some hack's home brew fire-trap. Or a pair of 12AU7's that someone ran for 30 days in place of a 12AX7 and screwed up. Or a pair of 45's that someone wanted to try in a 2A3 circuit and beat the crap out of.
If you feel comfortable plunking down big bucks for used and possibly abused 'NOS' tubes, great. I want to buy NOS. I don't think it is fair to use dealers NOS stock for a free tube rolling session. I want to buy NOS if that's what I'm told I'm getting, and if I don't like the way the tube sounds when I use it, I take my lumps and move on - but I don't excpect the dealer to pay for my education, nor do I expect the next person getting the tubes to.
