Re: Cary 805C users -- Please give advice !!!

Hi Eric,

I have owned the 805C and also listened to the 805B at length: they are both good amps, and sound pleasing, but are far from the level of performance possible from an SET design. Your B will sound different if you convert it to a C circuit but it will not be earth shattering, more in the realm of modest improvement ... and ... some folks actually prefer the B version. I encourage you to keep your 805 and try another SET design and double your pleasure. I had Gordon Rankin make me a custom 45 based amp that, at least at that time, embodied all of his thoughts on an "ultimate" amp. It was so much better sounding than my 805C in every conceivable way that it was rather shocking. Gordon is making a production version of this amp available now (see his website) for about 15K, but you have to have very efficient speakers to hear what it is all about. But actually there is no need to spend that kind of money to get great sound. You can buy numerous 45, 2A3, 300B, etc. amps that sound really great and are extended at the frequency extremes, without breaking the bank. My advice: keep the B unmodded and get some other amps for a different sound when you want it.

Have fun,

jeff
